The Benefits of Acupuncture for Weight Loss in Nassau County

Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional medicine. While it is associated with Chinese medicine, as the first recorded use of this modality was found in China, its use actually predates recorded history. Wherever it originated, one thing is for sure: acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and has been proven to provide a wealth of health benefits, and believe it or not, one of those benefits is weight loss.

Whether you’re just starting your weight loss journey, you’ve tried several different diet and exercise plans to no avail, or you need help shedding those last few stubborn pounds, acupuncture for weight loss may be the perfect solution to you. Acupuncture regulates the neuroendocrine system, improves metabolism, optimizes digestion, minimizes inflammation, and has been shown to have a measurable effect on Body Mass Index (BMI). When combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, acupuncture can not only help you lose weight, but can also improve your physical and mental health, too.

If you’re trying to reach a healthier weight, here’s a look at four great reasons why acupuncture for weight loss may be able to help you achieve your goals.

Reduced Appetite

While there’s no doubt that you’re aware that the body produces hormones, you may be surprised that some of those hormones control your hunger, including ghrelin and leptin; the former triggers feelings of hungry while the latter tells you that you’re full. Acupuncture for weight loss has been found to regulate your body’s production of these hormones, which in effect can help to curb cravings, reduce appetite, and even deter you from snacking in between meals. A reputable West Hempstead, NY acupuncture therapist will know exactly what points to target to regulate the production of your hunger hormones and help you reach your weight loss goals.

Improved Digestion

In addition to reducing your appetite, acupuncture for weight loss can also help to improve your digestion. There are meridian points along the stomach and kidneys that, when activated, can naturally enhance the function of the digestive system. Not only will you digest your food more rapidly, but you will also absorb more vital nutrients into your body. Furthermore, the improved digestion that a West Hempstead, NY acupuncture clinician can help you attain can also enhance the overall health of your gut, reduce stomach upset, minimize constipation, and regulate other gastrointestinal problems that can result in weight gain.

Improved Metabolism

The thyroid and the pituitary gland play a key role in metabolism, a vital bodily process that is essential for your health. During metabolism, your body converts the food that you consume into the energy that you need to not only thrive, but to survive. It also has a direct impact on your weight, as the slower your metabolism is, the harder it is for you to burn fat. Because acupuncture for weight loss can stimulate the pituitary and thyroid glands, it can boost your baseline metabolism, which in turn will enhance your body’s ability to burn fat; plus, it will improve your energy levels, which will allow you to get more out of your workouts.

Reduced Inflammation

Inflammation can impact virtually all parts of the body, including tissues, muscles, and even the digestive tract. When these parts of the body are inflamed, your metabolism can slow down, and in turn, can put unnecessary stress on the digestive system. This inflammation can negatively impact the cardiovascular and immune systems, too. An experienced West Hempstead, NY acupuncture clinician will be able to access the points on your body that will modulate inflammation and regulate the body’s immune response, thus promoting weight loss, reducing oxidative stress, and eve improving your overall health and well-being.

Types of Acupuncture for Weight Loss

There are several points throughout the body that can be accessed through acupuncture to promote weight loss. Your West Hempstead, NY acupuncture practitioner will assess your specific body type and your overall health to determine which points to stimulate. She or he will then stimulate the flow of energy by massaging these targeted points and will then proceed with placing the thin needles into targeted points. The types of acupuncture for weight loss include:

  • The ears. There are several meridians in the ears, and believe it or not, they can help to reduce pain, anxiety, stress, and can even promote detoxification and increase energy levels. The meridians in the ears can aid in weight loss, too. When stimulated, these points can help to control your appetite, which can help you shed unwanted pounds.
  • The abdomen. There’s an acupoint located just below the belly button. When pressure is applied to that acupoint, it can help to improve digestion, which will promote weight loss. Abdominal acupuncture for weight loss can ease constipation and strengthen the body, too. There’s another point in the abdomen, known as the Abdomen Sorrow Point, that can aid in weight loss. Located near the rib cage, when this point is activated, it can help to regulate your appetite.
  • The knees. It may come as a surprise, but there are acupoints in the knees that can promote weight loss, too. These points, which are located just beneath the kneecaps, can promote better digestion when activated through acupuncture.
  • The ankles. Located about 2 inches above the inner ankle, these acupoints can improve digestive function, allowing you to digest your food more efficiently, and thus aid in weight loss.
  • The elbows. Points located on the interior of the elbow are connected to the large intestine. When activated by a West Hempstead, NY acupuncture clinician, this point in your elbow can help to aid in digestion, which will, in turn, support weight loss.

Does Acupuncture for Weight Loss Work?

Studies have confirmed that acupuncture for weight loss does, is, in fact, beneficial. In one study, in particular, researchers examined the effects of acupuncture on weight loss over a period of 1 month. The sessions were performed for 20 minutes, twice a week. At the end of the study, it was found that the participants had lower levels of insulin and leptin, and their body mass index (BMI) decreased.

West Hempstead is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 18,862 at the 2010 census. It is an unincorporated area in the Town of Hempstead and is represented by Councilman Edward Ambrosino.

West Hempstead first appeared on maps as the name of a Long Island Railroad station in 1893. There are 3 railroad stations within its borders: West Hempstead, Hempstead Gardens, and Lakeview. The line continues to Valley Stream where it joins the Babylon Branch. Halls Pond Park, the main park within West Hempstead, was dedicated by Nassau County in 1961. The smaller Echo Park contains a public indoor pool. Its name is derived from the community’s first four little league teams: Eagles, Cardinal, Hawks, and Orioles. In 1956, the West Hempstead Public Library was founded and chartered by the State in 1967. Its present 28,000 square-foot facility was completed in 2007.

In 2001, residents of West Hempstead held a nonbinding referendum on renaming the community. The vote followed a two-year effort by the West Hempstead Civic Association and the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce to give the community a unique name, distancing itself from the neighboring and urbanized Hempstead. By a 94-vote margin, West Hempstead retained its name over the proposed Mayfair Gardens.

West Hempstead is easily accessed from the Southern State Parkway at Exit 17N.
