Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

Here at Ni Nan Healing Art Center, we get many questions about our various services. This is very true of acupuncture. Acupuncture is a method of healing that is derived from Oriental Medicine. The procedure for acupuncture involves the reprogramming of normal body function through the insertion of fine, sterile needles into various pressure points in the body. When inserted, the needles will send signals to the patient’s brain. These signals will promote healing by awakening the body’s natural ability to heal. Although a popular method of pain management, there are still many questions that our team gets asked about acupuncture in Nassau County, NY. Here are some of the most popular:

Is Acupuncture Safe?
Absolutely. To this date, there has never been a death reported from acupuncture. Although it is always recommended to have it performed by a trained practitioner, the procedure is safe and noninvasive. Acupuncture does not usually cause pain or bleeding either. As far as sanitary concerns, all of the needles used by our team are disposable and sterilized upon use. Although injury can be a risk of acupuncture, it is not common. All acupuncture practitioners are thoroughly trained to insert needles into the proper points on the body.
What are the Side Effects of an Acupuncture Procedure?
Other than a slight bruise from time to time, there are no side effects from getting acupuncture treatment. This should be a confidence booster to anyone who has been curious to try acupuncture for pain management or other health concerns.
Is Acupuncture Painful?

Many prospective acupuncture patients are concerned about pain associated with the insertion of acupuncture needles. Because the needles used are about as thin as an animal’s whisker, they are basically pain free. After the needles are inserted, the trained practitioner will push the needle to an appropriate depth in the patient’s body. When this happens the patient will feel a sensation that varies from warmth to tingling. Although every patient has a different experience, pain has never been reported as a side effect.

Where will the Needles be Inserted on my Body?

This depends on what you are receiving acupuncture for. The points for acupuncture, or acupoints, are located throughout the whole body. Needles are usually placed on the patient’s extremities from their elbows to their hands and then knees and feet. Sometimes the needles will be inserted into the abdomen, back, or ears as well.

What are Acupoints?

Acupoints are the areas, or meridians, where the energy of the method combines with the body. There are many all over the human body, and a trained practitioner will know exactly where to insert the needles.

What is a Meridian?

The meridians on the body are where the flow of energy to the affected area begins. Each meridian serves as a pathway to an organ or body part that needs to be treated. When done correctly, the affected area will be energized and treated to restore balance and a pain free function.

Are Acupuncture Needles Sterilized?

Absolutely. Acupuncture needles arrive in individual wrapping and are sterilized prior to shipment. They are first opened by the practitioner for the first time. After each procedure the needles are disposed of in a medical waste container. Upon your first treatment, your practitioner will explain the sterilization process to you as well.

How Often Should I Receieve Acupuncture?

Usually, treatments are performed on a weekly basis, often twice a week for the first two weeks, and once a week afterwards. After the condition has been controlled and you are free of pain or symptoms, the treatments are performed less frequently. If the issue that you are having has been present for a long time, longer healing times or more frequent treatments may be necessary.

How can I prepare for my Session?

Other than eating lightly so your body has a good energy flow, not much preparation is needed. It is best to have eaten beforehand so you do not feel weak or light headed. It is also best to not engage in strenuous activity or drink alcohol, or smoke prior to treatment.

Can I Receive Acupunture if I am Pregnant?

Yes. Because there are some points that are contraindicated during pregnancy, it is important to inform your practitioner if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. However there are no known risks or side effects to pregnant patients.
