The Benefits of Acupuncture for Weight Loss in Nassau County

Man getting treated with acupuncture for weight loss in Plainview, NY

Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional medicine. While it is associated with Chinese medicine, as the first recorded use of this modality was found in China, its use actually predates recorded history. Wherever it originated, one thing is for sure: acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and has been proven to provide a wealth of health benefits, and believe it or not, one of those benefits is weight loss.

Whether you’re just starting your weight loss journey, you’ve tried several different diet and exercise plans to no avail, or you need help shedding those last few stubborn pounds, acupuncture for weight loss may be the perfect solution to you. Acupuncture regulates the neuroendocrine system, improves metabolism, optimizes digestion, minimizes inflammation, and has been shown to have a measurable effect on Body Mass Index (BMI). When combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, acupuncture can not only help you lose weight, but can also improve your physical and mental health, too.

If you’re trying to reach a healthier weight, here’s a look at four great reasons why acupuncture for weight loss may be able to help you achieve your goals.

Reduced Appetite

While there’s no doubt that you’re aware that the body produces hormones, you may be surprised that some of those hormones control your hunger, including ghrelin and leptin; the former triggers feelings of hungry while the latter tells you that you’re full. Acupuncture for weight loss has been found to regulate your body’s production of these hormones, which in effect can help to curb cravings, reduce appetite, and even deter you from snacking in between meals. A reputable Plainview, NY acupuncture therapist will know exactly what points to target to regulate the production of your hunger hormones and help you reach your weight loss goals.

Improved Digestion

In addition to reducing your appetite, acupuncture for weight loss can also help to improve your digestion. There are meridian points along the stomach and kidneys that, when activated, can naturally enhance the function of the digestive system. Not only will you digest your food more rapidly, but you will also absorb more vital nutrients into your body. Furthermore, the improved digestion that a Plainview, NY acupuncture clinician can help you attain can also enhance the overall health of your gut, reduce stomach upset, minimize constipation, and regulate other gastrointestinal problems that can result in weight gain.

Improved Metabolism

The thyroid and the pituitary gland play a key role in metabolism, a vital bodily process that is essential for your health. During metabolism, your body converts the food that you consume into the energy that you need to not only thrive, but to survive. It also has a direct impact on your weight, as the slower your metabolism is, the harder it is for you to burn fat. Because acupuncture for weight loss can stimulate the pituitary and thyroid glands, it can boost your baseline metabolism, which in turn will enhance your body’s ability to burn fat; plus, it will improve your energy levels, which will allow you to get more out of your workouts.

Reduced Inflammation

Inflammation can impact virtually all parts of the body, including tissues, muscles, and even the digestive tract. When these parts of the body are inflamed, your metabolism can slow down, and in turn, can put unnecessary stress on the digestive system. This inflammation can negatively impact the cardiovascular and immune systems, too. An experienced Plainview, NY acupuncture clinician will be able to access the points on your body that will modulate inflammation and regulate the body’s immune response, thus promoting weight loss, reducing oxidative stress, and eve improving your overall health and well-being.

Types of Acupuncture for Weight Loss

There are several points throughout the body that can be accessed through acupuncture to promote weight loss. Your Plainview, NY acupuncture practitioner will assess your specific body type and your overall health to determine which points to stimulate. She or he will then stimulate the flow of energy by massaging these targeted points and will then proceed with placing the thin needles into targeted points. The types of acupuncture for weight loss include:

Does Acupuncture for Weight Loss Work?

Studies have confirmed that acupuncture for weight loss does, is, in fact, beneficial. In one study, in particular, researchers examined the effects of acupuncture on weight loss over a period of 1 month. The sessions were performed for 20 minutes, twice a week. At the end of the study, it was found that the participants had lower levels of insulin and leptin, and their body mass index (BMI) decreased.

Some information about Plainview, NY

Plainview is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located near the North Shore of Long Island in the town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population of the CDP as of 2010 was 26,217. The Plainview post office has the ZIP code 11803.

Plainview’s origins date to 1648, when Robert Williams, a settler from Wales, bought land in the area. The land was considered desirable for farming because of a small pond named the Moscopas by local Native Americans, meaning ‘hole of dirt and water’. The remainder of the land in the area was purchased by Thomas Powell in 1695 as part of the Bethpage Purchase. The name ‘Mannatto Hill’ had already appeared on the 1695 deed of the Bethpage Purchase, and the settlement came to be called ‘Manetto Hill’. Manitou was the Native American word either for ‘god’ or for ‘spirit’.

The 1837 arrival of the Long Island Rail Road to nearby Hicksville brought a boom to local farming. In 1885, residents of Manetto Hill petitioned the United States Postal Service for a local post office, but were turned down because, according to several accounts, a similar name was already in use upstate. The hamlet was then named ‘Plainview’, for the view of the Hempstead Plains from the top of the Manetto Hills.

Plainview remained a farming community, famous for growing cucumbers for the huge Heinz pickle factories located in nearby Farmingdale and Hicksville. In the early 1900s blight destroyed the cucumber crop and many farmers switched to potatoes. After World War II, a potato blight combined with the desire of many returning GIs to leave New York City for the more rural Long Island, convinced many farmers to sell their property, leading to massive development in the area, giving rise to so-called suburban sprawl. Between 1950 and 1960, the hamlet grew from a population of 1,155 to more than 35,000. Most of the available land was developed during this period or otherwise designated as parkland. While overall development declined it did continue sporadically as smaller remaining parcels of land were also developed. In recent years, some of the few large remaining parcels have given way to gated communities, which are in contrast to most housing in the area. Some of these developments include ‘The Hamlet on Olde Oyster Bay’ and ‘The Seasons at Plainview’, a residential community focused on over age 55 residents and first time home buyers.

Non-Needle Treatment

Acupuncture is just one form of therapy used within the coherent system of healing known as Oriental Medicine. It involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles to “re-program” and restore normal functions in the body.

Herbal medicine has been used worldwide for thousands of years. It has been used by all cultures in the East and the West, and was the dominant form of medicine on the planet until the last century.

In addition to acupuncture and herbology, cupping therapy has been part of Chinese medicine for over 2,500 years.
