How to Prepare for Your First Atlantic Beach, NY Acupuncture Appointment

Acupuncture is an ancient healing process that predates recorded history. The technique involves stimulating key points within the body, typically by inserting thin needs through the surface of the skin, to restore the flow of energy. Though no one knows exactly when, where, or how this practice originated, it was first recorded in Huang Di Nei Jing, The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, an ancient Chinese medical textbook, some 3,000 years ago. The approach can be used to treat an assortment of mental and physical health issues, such as allergies, anxiety, arthritis, infertility, TMJ, pain relief, stress, sinusitis, insomnia, depression, and insomnia (just to name a few). Even better, it’s completely free of toxic pharmaceuticals.

Whether you’re suffering from a physical or mental health condition or you just want to restore your inner balance, alleviate your stress, and enhance your mood, you might be thinking about scheduling an appointment with a Atlantic Beach, NY acupuncture therapist. If you’ve never had acupuncture before, however, there’s no doubt that you’re wondering what to expect. In order to ensure you get the most out of your experience, here are some tips that you can use to prepare for your first visit to a Nassau County acupuncture clinic near you.

Schedule Your Appointment Wisely

First and foremost, it’s a good idea to schedule your session with a Atlantic Beach, NY acupuncture clinic wisely. Avoid making your appointment before or after strenuous activities, such as a workout session at the gym, or during a part of the day where you’re under time constraints, like on your lunch break; doing so could end up making you feel stressed out during or after your treatment, and that will surely take away from the full benefits of the experience. Make sure that you have plenty of time to get to your appointment so that you feel relaxed when you arrive at the clinic, and that you don’t have anything demanding to attend to after your session is over.

Be Sure to Eat

You don’t want to show up to the Atlantic Beach, NY acupuncture clinic on an empty stomach, especially during your first session, as you don’t know how your body will react to the treatment. If you’re hungry, you could end up feeling tired, woozy, and worn-out after your therapy session. Ideally, you should try to eat a well-balanced, fulfilling, but not too heavy meal before your session. If that isn’t possible, have a healthful snack to satiate your hunger and keep your blood sugar in check, such as a banana, an apple, or nuts. You want to have fuel in your body, but you don’t want to be overly stuffed and uncomfortable.

Avoid Caffeine

Steer clear of coffee, tea, or any other caffeinated beverages before your session at a Atlantic Beach, NY acupuncture clinic. Caffeine is a stimulant, which is why it wakes you up and makes you feel more alert; however, it also speeds up your heart rate and can put you on edge, which isn’t exactly the ideal metabolic or mental state to be in before an acupuncture therapy session. Caffeine also increases sympathetic nerve activity, which sets the body into fight-or-flight mode. Because acupuncture shifts the body away from the sympathetic state and steers you toward a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, consuming caffeine can inhibit the process. Furthermore, when your heart rate is increased, it may impact your acupuncturist’s ability to accurately assess your pulse, and therefore, impact his or her ability to devise an appropriate therapeutic approach.

Nix the Alcohol

One of the most notable benefits of acupuncture is that it helps to increase focus and allows you to see (not as in your vision, but as in seeing the world with more clarity). Alcohol is a suppressant. It makes you feel numb and clouds the brain, and during acupuncture therapy, that isn’t a good thing. Increased mental and spiritual clarity are two of the objectives of acupuncture, and if you’re under the influence of alcohol, you’ll be less aware of your body, thoughts, and feelings. You should avoid alcoholic drinks after your session, too, as it may minimize the effects of the treatment. In order to make the most of our experience, avoid the adult libations before and after your appointment at a Atlantic Beach, NY acupuncture clinic.

Gather Your Medical History

Your Atlantic Beach, NY acupuncture therapist will want to gather your medical history prior to your appointment, so before you head to a clinic that offers acupuncture near you, make sure that you take the time to make up a list of all the pertinent details. Include any conditions you have ever been diagnosed with, any medications you are currently taking or have taken in the past, surgeries you have had and accidents you have been in, and your family’s health history, too. It might be helpful to write everything down so that you don’t forget any pertinent information. Your acupuncturist will need all of this information before your session begins so that he or she can devise the most appropriate treatment strategy.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Don’t show up to your appointment in your business attire or tight-fitting, stiff clothing. Instead, wear loose-fitting clothing that you can move in. Looser clothing will be easier to adjust so that the acupuncturist can access key areas. Also, you’ll be more comfortable after your session is over if you’re wearing loose-fitting clothing. Your acupuncturist may ask you to remove some articles of clothing, especially if you’re having your back treated; however, if you aren’t comfortable doing so, he or she will be able to accommodate your preference.

Turn Off Your Devices

You don’t want to have any distractions during your appointment, as you want to be able to focus on your thoughts, your body, and your feelings. As such, make sure you turn off your cell phone, tablet, smartwatch, or any other devices that could ping, ding, or ring during the session and distract your attention. Use your acupuncture session as a time to concentrate on yourself without any interruptions.

Some information about Atlantic Beach, NY

Atlantic Beach is a village in New York. It is located off the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the village population was 1,891.

The first real interest in the barrier island of Atlantic Beach came in 1922 when Robert Moses, the famous highway builder and public works czar, and Chairman of the State Council of Parks, included Atlantic beach as part of his ‘State Park Plan for New York’. The blueprint, which is on file at the archives in Albany, showed a parkway from central Queens to a bridge crossing Reynolds Channel with architecturally refined facilities for thousands of beach goers; unfortunately however, cost overruns on many of Mr. Moses’ other projects at the time and other factors dampened his plans which were ultimately abandoned.

In 1923, the village’s first developer, Atlantic Beach Associates led by Stephen P. Pettit, a former Nassau County Sheriff and banker from Freeport, had dreams of creating a place that would rival the City of Long Beach, which was created by a Politician and amusement park operator named William H. Reynolds. He died just after buying land for 3,500 lots in Atlantic Beach.

In 1926, real estate tycoon William Austin, who graduated from Yale University with his associate, Charles N. Talbot Jr, formed Island Park Associates which purchased the land for $4,000,000. William Austin was married to Actress Josephine Sanders, better known as Irene Delroy; the wedding was officiated by Mayor James J. Walker on July 15, 1931. Austin and Talbot completed Pettit’s preliminary dredging and. shoring work, and proceeded to subdivide the property. They installed gas and electricity lines, and a sanitary sewer system was installed in 1927. They began selling land and building homes; the first 45 of the 150 homes they planned on building were financed using a mortgage from The Title Guarantee and Trust Company. The. homes were all designed with seven rooms, two baths, private detached garages on 48′ x 88′ lots and were built in a wide array of styles. Mr. Austin finished Petitt’s plan to build a bridge between Far Rockaway and Atlantic beach, which was opened and dedicated on June 29, 1927. A boardwalk was planned for the entire ocean side but, as constructed, it was about a mile long, stretching from west of The Plaza and extending beyond Vernon Avenue, and double the width of the boardwalk which exists today.
